Dental Implants

Having a smile that you love is a source of joy, but tooth loss can prove a major (and often sudden) obstacle. Whether from gradual tooth decay or unexpected accidents, people lose teeth every day. But when this happens, it does not spell the end for your smile. With dental implants in Calabasas at TruGlo, we offer patients a way to rebuild their smile so it’s better than before.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are titanium posts that your dentist can surgically insert into the gums where tooth loss has occurred. In most cases, the implants will serve as an anchor for a single new crown, which is a custom-made artificial tooth. But patients also have the option of using implants as an extra sturdy support for a set of full or partial dentures.

Living with missing teeth is not only a cosmetic concern. Prolonged periods without even a single tooth can result in gradual (and often permanent) changes to the jaw’s shape, stability, and structure. So if you have lost a tooth (or several) we recommend booking an appointment to discuss your solutions for restoring your smile.

Getting dental implants: Overview of the process

The process for receiving dental implants involves a few steps and separate visits to our office, but patients agree the wait is worth it. There are three main parts to the process.

Consultation and evaluation:

The first visit is about matching you with the right tooth replacement solution. We discuss your situation, review your medical history, and examine your mouth. After that, we can work with you to put together a treatment plan. If there are preparation steps we need to take (e.g., removing a damaged tooth), we can plan these as well.

Placing the implant:

The next step is a visit where we place your implant post directly into the place of the missing tooth. Once it is placed, we can take impressions of your mouth to use in creating a custom-made crown that will look like a natural part of your smile. In some cases, you may receive a temporary crown.

Affixing your new tooth:

Once the crown is ready (or your dentures), you can come in for a final visit, during which we place your new tooth on the healed implant post. If everything looks right, then you are ready to enjoy your restored smile.
Some patients may need to have a bone grafting procedure before moving forward with implant placement. However, this is only necessary if you have lost a significant amount of bone mass. While the name is intimidating, a bone grafting procedure is simple and allows patients to naturally rebuild some of the jawbone mass.

Are dental implants right for me?

Dental implants are the sturdiest tooth replacement solution, making them a popular choice for patients dealing with tooth loss. However, they are not a one-size-fits-all solution, and candidates may want to consider a few factors. Dental implants are best for patients missing only a single tooth, or a couple at most. For replacing greater numbers of teeth, patients may have an easier time with dental bridges. However, implant-supported dentures are an option for patients missing most or all of their teeth.

How long do dental implants last?

One of the greatest appeals of dental implants is how long they last, with many patients seeing them last for 25 years to a lifetime. However, caring for your replacement teeth is a vital part of getting the best durability out of them. The good news is that taking care of dental implants is not at all a hassle. Rather, a healthy routine of flossing and brushing is an excellent foundation. Pair that with routine visits to the dentist (twice a year for most people), and you can expect your implants to be in better shape. Additionally, avoiding risky activities is key to staying injury-free. As durable as dental implants are, contact sports and other injury-prone activities can leave an impact on your new (and natural) teeth.
