Sedation Dentistry in Calabasas

What is sedation emergency?

Sedation dentistry covers any use of medical sedation to help patients have a pain-free, stress-free experience during a dental visit. The types that we use can range from mild sedation to full anesthesia, depending on what each patient needs for their case. We always work closely with patients to ensure that the type of sedation they receive is safe and effective for them after a thorough consultation. Some of the types available include:

Nitrous Oxide:

Also called laughing gas, this sedation is adaptable to each patient’s needs. It provides a gentle calming effect, and the effects wear off quickly, meaning you can drive yourself from the office afterward.

Oral Sedation:

Patients receive a pill dosed to their needs. The effects can range from a mild calming experience to feeling quite sleepy. Patients may need someone to drive them following oral sedation.

IV Sedation:

This is given to patients intravenously. Some patients remain awake but relaxed, while others may fall asleep for the entire treatment. You will need someone to drive you home after.

General Anesthesia:

Patients will be fully unconscious. This is usually reserved for more intensive procedures, such as the removal of severely impacted wisdom teeth. Also requires someone to drive you afterward.

Is sedation dentistry right for me?

If you think sedation dentistry may be needed for your next visit, we encourage you to discuss it with our specialists. One of our core goals is for patients not to miss out on treatments due to anxiety or fear. We discuss your options in a confidential environment that is entirely judgment-free. Some signs that sedation dentistry may be right for you include:
  • Having had a previous negative dental experience
  • Feeling like putting off treatment out of anxiety
  • Being highly sensitive to pain or needles
  • Having high levels of general anxiety
  • Having an appropriate medical history for the sedation type

What is sedation dentistry like?

The experience of dental sedation depends on the type and strength of the sedative received. It can range from a very gentle sense of feeling calm, up to completely falling asleep for the entir treatment. We will go over your sedation type with you beforehand so you know what to expect. For some types of sedation, patients will remain groggy or tired while waiting for the effects to wear off. So, it is common to plan on taking the rest of the day off from work or other engagements.

Does insurance cover sedation dentistry care?

It depends on your insurance provider. While many insurances consider sedation a non-essential dental treatment, other plans might cover it in some cases. However, it can have some financial benefits, such as allowing your dentist to complete complex procedures more quickly or in a single visit, which would lower the costs of those procedures. Still, every case is different, and we are happy to go over your options and explore ways to finance your treatment.
