When do you need emergency dentistry?

The first way to measure if you have a dental emergency on your hands is if it looks or feels like an emergency. If you even think you might have such a situation, then it is always worth calling our office. In general, some signs that you have an emergency situation can include:
  • Severe pain in your gums or teeth
  • Broken or severely damaged teeth
  • A filling has broken or fallen out
  • Damage to your gums (bleeding, cuts)
  • Significant discoloration of the gums
  • Broken dental devices or prosthetics (braces, dentures, crowns, dental implants)
  • Loose teeth
  • Sudden cessation of mouth pain (could indicate the tooth’s nerves are dying)

How to see an emergency dentist

The first step is to call our office and explain your situation to a staff member. If you do indeed have an emergency, a staff member will book your appointment for the same day and walk you through any steps to take to prepare for your visit. For example, if you have a knocked-out tooth, they will go over steps to take that might allow us to place the tooth back in.
If you have a different kind of emergency, we may refer you to an emergency room. However, it is important to visit a dentist first for any dental emergencies, as many emergency rooms do not have the staff to handle such cases.

Key emergency dental treatments

  • Root canal: Addresses tooth infection or damaged teeth in which the inner tooth is at risk. Quickly alleviates symptoms such as pain.
  • Tooth extraction: In cases when a tooth is damaged beyond repair, it may need to be quickly removed.
  • Repair: If fillings, crowns, dentures, or other dental treatments become damaged, it is important to have them repaired right away.
  • Oral surgery: For a tooth that is knocked out or other more significant injuries, we may need to perform a procedure to restore the tooth or fix the cause of the emergency.

Does insurance cover emergency dental care?

Emergency dental care is usually covered by insurance, as it is of high importance to the patient’s well-being. However, the extent of coverage can vary and depends on the specifics of your carrier’s plan. We work quickly with patients to see if their treatment will be covered by their insurance, ensuring they get the care they need in time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer same-day emergency dental appointments?

Provided that our emergency dentist is available, we can offer you a same-day emergency dental appointment. Do not hesitate to contact our office at 818-717-7872; we will do our best to schedule your appointment as soon as possible.

If you have a severe toothache, contact an emergency dental office immediately and make a same-day appointment. While you are waiting to be admitted by your dentist, you can manage pain with over-the-counter painkillers, but be sure not to exceed the recommended daily dose. Also, rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution every 3 to 4 hours, avoid chewing food on the side of your mouth where the pain is located, and do not touch the aching tooth. If you experience swelling, apply cold compresses to the outside of your cheek for 15 to 20 minutes, with 30-minute breaks between applications.

Knocked-out and broken teeth can be treated and even restored to their full function. In cases of knocked-out, broken, and dislodged teeth, you must receive medical attention within the first 30 to 60 minutes after the accident. Bring your knocked-out tooth to the dental office and keep it in a clean container with saliva or milk, or place it behind your cheek on the way to the office. Do not try to reinsert the tooth by yourself, and do not store it in water, clean it with soap, or rub it with tissue or cloth, as these actions are likely to damage the nerves and blood vessels. If your tooth is broken or chipped, collect the pieces, if possible, and bring them to the office, as they may be bonded back to the tooth.

An emergency appointment is typically scheduled on the same day or within 1 to 2 days, depending on the dentist’s availability and the severity of your issues. If you have a severe toothache or an injury, do not hesitate to contact us at 818-717-7872, and we will admit you as quickly as possible.

In cases of severe toothache, gum swelling, tooth abscesses, cysts on the gums, and other dental issues, you should go to an emergency dentist. ER does not provide dental services, but can help by prescribing medication or draining an abscess if necessary, after which you will still have to go to a dentist. However, if you experience severe swelling that spreads to the neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, and a high fever, go to an ER immediately to deal with the life-threatening spread of the infection.

Dental emergency costs largely depend on the severity of your issue and the type of treatment you get. For example, emergency exams and X-rays can cost $100 to $300, while root canal therapy typically costs between $750 and $1500 if you pay out of pocket. Additionally, emergency services are covered by most insurance plans, with coverage ranging from 50% to 80%.

Our offices are open from Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, and on select Saturdays. If you have an emergency, do not hesitate to call us at 818-717-7872, and we will do our best to find an appointment time that is most convenient for you.
