Teeth Cleaning

What Is a Professional Teeth Cleaning?

Brushing and flossing are the cornerstones of oral health. However, even routine home care is not enough to keep your teeth at their best. Bacteria or food particles can be missed during your home cleaning, allowing the door to open to tooth decay and harmful tooth buildup.

In most cases, patients have their teeth cleaned as part of your routine visit to the dentist twice a year. Teeth cleaning at the dentist involves a skilled hygienist using professional tools to remove any buildup. We meticulously examine your teeth, cleaning every part of each tooth’s surface. After, you will leave our office feeling refreshed.

What Is the Treatment Process?

Exam:

As teeth cleaning is a typical part of a routine dental visit, we usually start with an exam of your teeth. This may include X-rays to track your dental health.

Cleaning:

Next, we move through the cleaning process. This involves using special tools, such as an ultrasonic cleaner, to break down plaque on the teeth.

Fluoride Treatment:

We usually follow up cleaning with a special fluoride treatment. By applying fluoride to your teeth, they can gain protection that lasts for weeks after your visit.

What Is a Teeth Cleaning Treatment Like?

Our highly trained dental hygienists take great care to balance effective care with patient comfort. Most patients report an easily tolerated experience without any real pain. However, patients with irritated or sensitive gums may need some numbing to keep it pain-free. Most cleanings take about 30 to 60 minutes. The entire time, you can sit back and relax in our comfortable chairs and watch streaming series on our big-screen televisions. We believe in working to make any dental work a positive experience for each of our patients.

Is Cleaning Really that Important?

The short answer: yes, it is. The simple fact is that professional dental cleaning instruments (and our years of training) are far more effective at cleaning teeth than even the best toothbrush and floss. But, beyond simply feeling clean, some of the reasons include that it:

  • Reduces your risk for heart disease and stroke
  • Reduces your risk for dementia
  • Helps prevent bad breast
  • Prevent tooth decay and gum disease

How Long Will the Results Last?

Teeth cleaning results can be kept up through a healthy diet and at-home dental hygiene. However, how clean your teeth stay is determined by other factors such as genetics. While we recommend patients come back every 6 months for another exam, this is just the average. Patients with early signs of gum disease may need up to 4 treatments each year, while other patients may need less frequent visits. Still, having routine dental care at least twice per year is never a bad start, allowing your teeth to regularly be checked and cleaned to stay at their best.
