What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are two types of dental restorations that address tooth decay that has eaten away significant portions of a tooth. For early stages of tooth decay, patients may only need a filling. And for severe decay, you may need to cap a tooth with a crown or replace the tooth entirely. But inlays and onlays cover the middle ground, restoring damaged teeth before they can become too decayed. We create inlays and onlays for patients using either high-grade porcelain or a unique composite resin. This material is placed on, in, or around the damaged part of the tooth, restoring its structural integrity and appearance at the same time.
  • Inlays: Fitted inside the chewing area of the tooth.
  • Onlays: Placed over the tooth.

What Is the Treatment Process?

Exam & Consultation:

First, we need to check your teeth and see what the situation is. Based on the type and severity of damage, we will recommend your optimal treatment plan.

Cleaning & Preparing:

Simply covering up decay is not enough. First, we need to clear out all bacteria, buildup, and decayed parts of the tooth to prepare it for restoration.

Inlay/Onlay Placement:

Once the tooth is ready, we place and bond the material to the tooth.

Inlays & Onlays Quick Facts

  • Results Duration: Between 10 and 30 years (with consistent oral hygiene)
  • Type of Treatment: Restorative dentistry
  • Checkup Visits: Online regular routine visits
  • Treatment Purpose: Restore a damaged tooth
  • Comfort Level: Pain-free
  • Maintenance Requirements: Daily at-home brushing and flossing, dental visits every 6 months

What Is an Inlay or Onlay Treatment Like?

Though inlays and onlays address more advanced dental damage, the treatment process feels quite similar to getting a routine dental filling. However, it is typically split into two visits.

The First Visit

First, we prepare the tooth. At this stage, we may shave down parts of it and roughen the surface to allow it to better adhere to the material. This typically can take about 1 hour. If you are having porcelain inlays or onlays, we will take impressions of your teeth to create a custom product.

The Second Visit

We use local anesthetic delivered via a specialized machine to thoroughly number the treatment area. This cancels out any pain sensation, though you may feel some vibration or pressure while your dentist is at work. If you have active decay, we will need to clear that out before placing the inlay or onlay.

Once the material is placed, we will further shape and polish it to ensure it fits in your bit and looks like a fully natural, healthy tooth. This process also takes about 1 hour, though sometimes it may be longer.

Is an Inlay or Onlay Right for Me?

Inlays and onlays are best for patients in the middling stages of tooth decay or who have medium damage to a tooth. Inlays work well if you have a significant portion of the center of the tooth missing, while onlays help restore teeth with damage that reaches the tooth’s edge. In either case, the first step is to set up a consultation and exam with Dr. Rhonda Kalasho to evaluate your situation and build a personalized treatment plan.

How Long Will the Results Last?

Modern materials for inlays and onlays can last for decades, with most patients seeing 10–30 years of benefits. However, some factors that can impact how long your results last can include:
  • Material quality (we use only high-grade materials from certified manufacturers)
  • Material type (porcelain tends to last longer than resin)
  • Oral hygiene (brushing and flossing are key)
  • Diet (some foods are more likely to wear down your teeth)
  • Lifestyle (contact sports in particular are a danger to teeth)
